The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) treats the patient with a specific treatment program designed by the physical therapist, under the guidance of the physical therapist and physician. The PTA is also responsible for coordinating any changes in the patient’s condition to the physical therapist, working toward maximizing the patient’s functional level.

Treat the patient in accordance with a specific program designed by the physical therapist and coordinates this with other team members.

Provide education and training to patients and family regarding the therapy plan, home exercise program, home safety, and diagnosis/illness.

Take measurements related to patient’s condition; reports and coordinates these and any other changes to the supervising physical therapist.

Maintain a level of professionalism consistent with the code of ethics of the APTA and HHP and reports any unethical situations to the PT Board or appropriate personnel.

Provide specific documentation of patient treatment and progress to the physical therapist and agency.

Participate in face to face patient conferences with the Physical Therapist as required by state regulations.

Participate in mandatory case conferences.

Observe safety precautions in all aspects of job responsibilities.

Maintain a clean and hazard-free environment.

Participate in performance improvement activities. Required, licensed Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) in the state of practice
Good organizational and time management skills.
Good verbal and written skills.
Ability to operate therapy equipment (US, TENS, gait belt, etc.)
Displays initiative and the ability to work independently, but recognizes when assistance is required.
Required, possess knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid guidelines essential to Home Health Coverage
Required, Demonstrate the ability to assess the interpretation and formulation of patient care plans to meet the needs appropriate to the age of the patients serviced by the Agency
Required, demonstrate proficiency in clinical documentation
Required, valid drivers license, and reliable transportation
Required, computer, internet access and email capabilities from home or other off-site location
Required, Associate degree from an APTA accredited school of physical therapist assistants
Training and Experience
One year physical therapist assistant experience with preferably one year experience in the field of Home Health Physical Therapy
Physical Requirements
Work is performed in patient homes, the employee’s vehicle, and in an office environment.
Work requires continual mobility.
Frequently sits, stands, stoops, twists, turns, reaches, and grasps. Able to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time.
Continually communicates in person and over telephone systems with patients, staff, and other health care professionals; this requires good hearing and speaking skills.
Close-up vision is frequently required.
Frequently exposed to the hazards of city driving and is often exposed to temperature extremes.
Sometimes exposed to potentially unsafe and unsanitary conditions in patient homes.
Frequently exposed to biohazards in performing patient care activities.
Frequently pushes and pulls a typical weight of one hundred (100) pounds; maximum push/pull weight is two hundred fifty (250) pounds.
Frequently lifts and carries a typical weight of ten (10) pounds; maximum lift/carry weight is fifty (50) pounds.
